Motor sports has essentially developed in parallel with the development of motorised vehicles not long after the internal combustion engine was invented. In 1894 a city to city race between Paris and Rouen was organised by a French newspaper, which in turn spawned other city to city races. After racing on open public roads began to be banned, closed circuit racing was established. In 1906 the world's first dedicated motor racing track, the Aspendale Racecourse was built in Australia. In Europe Grand Prix races on closed circuits were organised after World War I. Motor racing became even more popular around the world after World War II.
